10 Essential Tips for Organizing Your Bathroom for Young Children

If you have young children, you know how important it is to make sure your bathroom is a safe space for them. While it’s important to take the obvious precautions, such as securing taps and testing water temperature, there are other ways to ensure that your bathroom is safe for your little ones. Here are ten tips from Smartroom to help you organize your bathroom for the safety of your under fives.

  1. Install an internal hook lock on the bathroom door to keep your child within sight and prevent them from running off or falling down the stairs. Remove low-level locks that can be accidentally engaged by children.
  2. Baby bath seats are convenient but not safety devices. Store them away when not in use to avoid tripping hazards and allow easy bath access for the rest of the family.
  3. Use non-slip bath mats to prevent slips and falls. Keep them in the bathroom, clean, and dry.
  4. Remove plugs from baths and sinks when not in use and store them in a cabinet or on a shelf above child level. Very young children can drown in less than half a minute in less than 3cm of water.
  5. Check the lid of your laundry basket. Consider gadgets to slow its shut or replace it with something that has a softer close.
  6. Use non-slip rugs to keep you and your child safe on the bathroom floor.
  7. Organize flannels, bath toys, towels, and cosmetics so that they are easy for you to access but out of your child’s reach.
  8. Put bins out of reach or find a bin with a lockable lid or add a latch.
  9. Store all out-of-reach items in a cabinet that is heavy enough not to tip if a child pulls on it.
  10. Install limiters on windows to prevent children from falling out. Use cordless blinds to avoid the risk of strangulation.

Remember, every child is different, and some may be more curious or inventive than others. The key is to be watchful and proactive in making your bathroom a safe space for your young children.
