The Do’s and Don’ts of Storing Items in a Storage Unit

The Do’s and Don’ts of Storing Items in a Storage Unit

When it comes to self-storage, many people are unsure of what they can and cannot store in a storage unit. At Smartroom, our self-storage facility located in Stoke Newington, London, we want to help you make informed decisions about what you can store in our units. Here’s a guide to what you can and cannot store in a storage unit.

What You Can Store in a Storage Unit

At Smartroom, we allow customers to store a wide range of items in our storage units. Here are some of the most common items that people store in our units:

  1. Furniture: From sofas to tables and chairs, furniture is a popular item to store in a storage unit. This is especially true for people who are moving or downsizing and need a temporary place to store their furniture.

  2. Clothing and textiles: Many people use self-storage units to store seasonal clothing, blankets, and other textiles.

  3. Electronics: If you need to store electronics, such as TVs, computers, or gaming systems, our storage units are a great option. Just make sure to wrap them securely and store them in a climate-controlled unit.

  4. Appliances: Refrigerators, stoves, and other large appliances can also be stored in a storage unit. Just make sure to clean them thoroughly before storing them to prevent mold and mildew.

  5. Vehicles: If you have a car, motorcycle, or other vehicle that you need to store, our storage units can accommodate them as well. Just make sure to choose a unit that is large enough to accommodate your vehicle.

What You Cannot Store in a Storage Unit

While our storage units can accommodate many types of items, there are some things that you cannot store in a storage unit. Here are some examples:

  1. Hazardous materials: Flammable, explosive, or toxic materials are not allowed in our storage units. This includes gasoline, propane tanks, fireworks, and other hazardous materials.

  2. Perishable items: Food, plants, and other perishable items are not allowed in our storage units. This is because they can attract pests and rodents, which can damage your belongings and cause problems for other customers.

  3. Illegal items: It goes without saying that illegal items, such as drugs or stolen goods, are not allowed in our storage units.

  4. Living things: You cannot store pets, humans, or any other living things in our storage units.

  5. Firearms: While you can store firearms in a storage unit, they must be unloaded and stored securely in a locked gun safe. Ammunition cannot be stored in the same unit as firearms.
